West Coast

Supports Ukraine

Nomad Stages, a performing and fine arts studio in Stephenville, NL, has joined forces with a large number of local volunteers, municipalities, honourable members and organizations to create West Coast Supports Ukraine. This organization is hosting a number of fundraising events to raise funds for potential refugees from Ukraine who may arrive in our province over the next couple of months. If our province does not receive refugees the money will be donated to another humanitarian organization to aid the Ukrainian people.

The first event is Songs for Support, which will be held at Clancy's Pub in Stephenville on Saturday, March 12th starting at 8:30pm. This benefit concert will feature local musicians including Brad AuCoin, Ginger Bennett, Gordon Cormier, Julia and Adam Day, Ben Dunphy, Tammy Dutcher & Andrew Perry. Admission is a donation at the door. There will also be a door prize, a 50/50 draw and tickets on a gift basket. There will be a livestream on the Nomad Stages Facebook page. Donations will be accepted via e-transfer to songsforukraine@gmail.com. The Town of Stephenville has announced that they will be matching any funds that are raised at the Songs for Support concert at Clancy's on March 12th.

Our second event is Songs for Support 2, which will be held at Zion Pentecostal Church in Stephenville on Thursday, March 17th at 7:00pm. There will be a livestream on the Nomad Stages Facebook Page. This concert will feature local musicians, including White Lightning, the SMS Accordion group, Sarah and Nelson White, Paul Pike, Zion Pentecostal Worship Team, Marigold Benoit, Nomad Stages' Triple Threat singers, Senior Dance Team, and Advanced Ballet group and more!

A silent online auction is also in the works for the weekend of April 22 - 24. A large number of items have already been donated from local businesses. Any donations from businesses or individuals would gladly be accepted. More details will be announced soon.

Another sub-committee is working with local schools to plan events to raise awareness. On Friday, March 18th the schools will hold Blue Skies and Sunflower Day, in which students and staff will be asked to dress in blue and yellow and make a donation. Other school activities are also in the works.

The Bay St. George area is home to over a dozen Ukrainian speakers, the largest Ukrainian population on the island, and is a logical location to support Ukrainian refugees in our province. The goal of the committee is to ensure that we can provide newcomers to our province with everything they need to start a new life and feel safe in their new country.
